When you are running your own show, it becomes incredibly important to surround yourself with the right kind of people- after all, you are the average of the 5 people you spend the most time with! Being a boss can be the best job in the world, but it also has its down points. This is why finding your “tribe” to share the journey with is imperative!
Networking- why is it so important?
1. Because being the boss can be lonely!
Sometimes owning a business can feel really lonely- you don’t have your manager cheering you on, reminding you that you are doing a great job, or work drinks on a Friday to vent to your work collegues about your week. Networking gives the ability to connect with other women in business who can share with you on this crazy journey. These ladies really GET you and your mission in a way that your best friend might not! You can bounce ideas of each other, share frustrations, and brainstorm solutions. When you’re up at 2am balancing the books or endlessly trying to capture the perfect photo for social media, chances are, some of them are too.
2. Opportunities to grow your business
As you form connections and friendships, often opportunities to collaborate and partner with other business owners in your network present themselves. Before looking to start partnerships, my advice would be to focus first on developing a connection and getting to know each other and your businesses. Women tend to work with women they like, so pushing a business card and a proposal within minutes of meeting someone new tends to catch them a little off guard. Be yourself, be genuine and focus on making a personal connection before making it professional.
Where to build your network
When I first branched out to do my own thing as “Clare Wood – Business Coach”, these groups were my saving grace and where I made my first “entrepreneur friends”. When it came to connecting and networking, these are my favourite groups, so thought I’d share with you if you are looking to connect with other amazing women in business!
Business Chicks are sleek, shiny and are organised to perfection! Although they are on more of the pricey end in terms of membership and events, you are treated to well catered events in nice venues with a high calibre of industry professional presenters (and celebrities!). You can be sure to come away inspired and well-connected.
Like Minded Bitches Drinking Wine (LMBDW) – Facebook Group
One of my favourite groups to get quality, practical business advice and make fantastic connections and friendships! If you’re a little intimidated joining some serious industry groups, this may be the place to start. There are 98K (and rapidly growing) fun-loving women in this global network. This is a FB group who also host regular, fun networking events that don’t even feel like work! P.S. You will be rubbing your e-shoulders with successful women such as Jane Lu CEO of ShowPo and Naomi Simson CEO of Red Balloon, who are also part of this group!
If face to face networking is not your thing, the dawn of social media has provided us with a platform in which you can build your business tribe, with your phone in one hand and a glass of wine in the other. Check out these amazing online groups:
Mums with Hustle Biz Club – Facebook Group
With 15K members and growing every day, this group is designed for sharing business advice, and know-how with entrepreneur mums (aka. mumpreneurs). It is regulated to ensure that the posts are informative and helpful, with no pesky ads or pyramid schemes getting in the way of genuine collaboration. Host mum Tracy is also an Instagram marketing queen and runs Podcasts and courses to share her own skills.
Mums & Co – Website
This site caters to the Mums in the business world and offers incredible content geared to meet the unique needs of balancing your ‘Mum’ and ‘Boss’ sides. There is some high-quality free content, and discounts and perks are offered to members. This group is hustling and growing and is definitely one to watch.

I’ve saved the best to last! This is MY Facebook group I recently started and as the name says, it’s specifically tailored to women in service-based businesses. I give out heaps of great FREE advice around how to grow your business, and it is a great place to promote your business, share your wins and challenges and connect with other women going through the same things as you. Please join our amazing group HERE.
Remember, your tribe will be the foundation for your success in business, so make sure you invest the time to connect with others to inspire, challenge and support you!
