Brianna Ansaldo is an Audio and Podcast Producer with 15 years experience working in the audio industry. She specialises in songwriting and production and has had her work featured on television shows aired internationally on NBC, CTV and Foxtel, in advertising campaigns (most notably Adidas) and has composed numerous short film scores.

After many years working as a touring musician and professional songwriter, Brianna decided that she no longer wanted to be a performer, and traded the stage for the studio. After a few years in the podcast production field, Brianna started her company Bamby Media as she became quite obsessed with high-quality story-telling and audio content creation. Bamby Media has grown quite substantially over the last 12 months with an ever-expanding team of awesome content creation wizards working to produce quality content for clients all over the world,

Brianna’s love is in the creation of sound. She wants to help her clients tell a story and communicate that via high quality, interesting audio. It’s about delivering an auditory experience that makes the listener feel something powerful.

Launching a podcast is one of the best things I have done for my business. In this episode I chat to Brianna from Bamby Media, who happens to be part of my Money & Marketing Makers program, about how to get started on launching a podcast. We talk about why you should launch a podcast, the equipment you need to use, how to create content, and how to commercialise your podcast. This is a really cool episode so make sure you stick around.

CLARE:Today’s guest is Brianna from Bamby Media, and the reason I wanted to get her on the show is because I have had a lot of people ask me on social media, how to go about starting a podcast. So I’ve invited Brianna along to talk about starting your own podcast, welcome Brianna!

 

BRIANNA:

Why thank you!

 

CLARE:

Can you do a quick intro on yourself before we get stuck into things.

 

BRIANNA:

My name is Brianna and I run a podcast production company called Bamby Media, based in Brisbane, Australia. We are a full service, one-stop-shop for people who want to produce their podcast or want a company to produce their podcast for them. I didn’t expect to get into this industry but I absolutely fell in love with it when I started getting into it. I can’t imagine doing anything else now.

 

CLARE:

If you are thinking, ‘Why would you need a podcast production studio?’ let me tell you, you definitely do! We’ll get into that later in the episode.

 

Brianna and I actually met in a funny way. Didn’t we? You were editing my friend’s podcast, The Emily Osmond Show. Can you share how we met, and how you came to join my online program?

 

BRIANNA:

Yes, it’s a funny story. I had been editing The Emily Osmond Show and she’s such a firecracker and there is so much information in each of her episodes and your episode with her was no different. Firstly, the sound quality was excellent and I knew these two ladies know what they are doing! And then as I was listening to it, I got very comfortable with how you two were talking to each other, the information you were provided felt spot on for where I was, and both of you were very motivational. I was in love with your passion. Now I had literally never done an online course before, I had been so involved in my business for the longest time, and it was purely because I edited that episode with Emily that I thought, these two women, their friends, I love Emily, I love the information, I’m going to go for it.

 

CLARE:

That’s awesome. The episode I did with Emily was about money mindset and managing your money. I’ll pop it in the show notes for today’s episode, episode 33. Basically, after you listened to it, you reached out and connected with me.

 

BRIANNA:

Yes, I stalked you for a bit as you do, I looked at your website and followed your Instagram. And I edited/listened to another podcast episode which was about investing in your business, monetarily, and it was something I didn’t overthink, you were launching that day and I thought, let’s just do it! And it was great.

 

CLARE:

I was so excited to see you have joined, and it was fabulous to have you along. Sadly it wrapped up this morning at the time of this recording. However, I am launching the next round soon, so I wanted to also get your take on why you signed up and what you learnt on the program.

 

BRIANNA:

Firstly, anywhere where there is passion, I am right onboard, and you seemed so passionate. Secondly, I thought it was about time, I was really kicking my business up in a serious way, so I thought it was good to start looking at the monetary and marketing side of things, which I hadn’t previously worried about before and hadn’t needed to before because it was a side hustle between raising children. But my business got so big that I need to take this by the horns and run with it. I brought accounting software and thought what the hell do I do with that, because previously I had just done it myself on Excel spreadsheets and sent it to my accountant. So with you being an accountant and also you had a strong social media presence, which meant you knew the marketing side of things, because I’d also recently joined Instagram and I needed to learn about that.

 

CLARE:

What are some of the wins you’ve had during the program?

 

BRIANNA:

I had a following of 100 or something when I started the program, and now I’ve more than doubled that, and that’s just from me showing up on stories. I’ve also grown my profit, month on month and I’m now about to hit my biggest month, which is $13,000, which is really cool and comes from knowing how I’m managing it and the steps that you provided in terms of calculating things.

 

CLARE:

I’m so proud of you for taking those steps. I’m about to launch my next round of the program, so it’s very exciting and I’ll be sharing more soon on the podcast. But today, I want to chat to you about launching a podcast.

 

Why should you launch a podcast?

 

BRIANNA:

It depends on the industry. You don’t have to be service-based, but you need to have a core message. I don’t think everyone should start a podcast, but you need to have a message to communicate with people. You also need to think about what your demographic is, and whether they listen to podcasts.

 

If you have those things, then 100% you should be doing a podcast. It is insane for your marketing strategy. There is no better way, as marketing goes.

CLARE:

I find it allows you to form of an intimate relationship with your listeners, because you are communicating straight to them. You can read people’s posts on social media, but hearing their voice, it’s a better way to connect and share your message.

 

If you are on the fence, for me personally, launching this podcast has been the most transformational thing I’ve done for my business. Launching this podcast has been huge for my profile and the relationships I’ve been able to develop in the industry and mostly for growing my business.

 

So when someone makes the decision to launch a podcast. What is the first thing they should do?

 

BRANNA:

First thing is to figure out what to say. You don’t have to have it all figured out, but you need to have some structure about what you are trying to communicate to people. I like to say to people. First things first, think of it as artwork, have a vision around your logo, the branding behind the artwork, it’s like a vision board, when you develop the artwork it’s the same as what you want to bring into a podcast, what look are you giving, is it you in the picture, or a cartoon, and that helps you get synced into what you say. Next, work out some scripting for an intro and outro because that defines your message, who you are and what you will say and what this podcast is about.

 

CLARE: I love that. The biggest question people ask me is, what equipment do I need? And I say this is the last thing you need to worry about. Having a clear idea of what you want to communicate and the content is super important! It’s the hardest part and people often forget about it.

 

On the topic of equipment…

 

What podcast equipment do you need to get started?

 

BRIANNA:

Depends on the budget. If you are starting out with limited budget, the very least you need is the headphones of your phone, plugged into your phone, and use VoiceMemo – that’s the budget option, it’ll get you started. I don’t want to stop people from launching because they can’t afford the gear. If you have a little bit of money and want to invest in it, then you can get a USB microphone. You can get the AudioTechnica 2100, which you have Clare, and they are great because they plug into the side of your laptop. I also recommend and my preference is the RODE NT USB because it has some more flavour in the audio tones. The AudioTechnica is under $100 and the RODE is more of an investment at around $200. Either option is fine!

 

The other thing you need is a pop filter, which is like a stocking wrapped around a circle, and that gets rid of a lot of poppy sounds on ‘p’ and ‘b’.

 

CLARE:

How to create content for a podcast?

 

BRIANNA:

Depends on who you are trying to target. To create content sometimes it’s easy, like for my client, the Queen of Confidence, she is able to provide content based off of that her clients ask her about and daily conversations she is already having daily. If you can’t do that, then it needs to come from market research, or questions that come up in your field and from your community. Join some Facebook groups relevant to your topic and get into conversations with people, then the content with start to flow from those conversations, because people will ask you questions you can answer in an episode.

 

CLARE:

One of my biggest pieces of advice, to those thinking of starting a podcast is plan your content. I try and keep out the fluff, and I spend LOTS of time thinking about what I’m going to say and ask, more than the time I spend saying it, because if you can do your talking in a structed way, it will come across in an easier way so that people can connect with what you’re actually saying, rather than getting on and rambling.

 

The next step in the process is editing.

 

What is your recommendation? Should people do this themselves or outsource it?

 

The editing process – to outsource or DIY?

 

BRIANNA:

I’m a podcast producer, so I say outsource.

 

CLARE:

I’m not a podcast producer and I outsource. I’ll put up my hand and say I do not know how to edit at all, but I don’t feel like to need to. I have a fantastic podcast editor, and there are lots of people in the industry, that I feel confident in finding people.

 

I understand also that it costs money, and I would never want it to hold you back from starting your podcast. Please just edit it yourself, rather than not start your podcast at all. But if you do have a little bit of money, get it outsourced.

 

BRIANNA:

I totally agree. If that’s the hurdle to not starting, then it’s a silly hurdle, just get it out, use free software, get free music, there are tutorials to step you through simple stuff that means you get something out. Then when you get more confident with it, then outsource.

 

How to make money from a podcast

 

CLARE:

In terms of commercialiseing a podcast, people ask a lot, how do I make money from a podcast? What’s your take on this?

 

BRIANNA:

It’s different for podcasting, people jump straight to, do I get ads, do I get sponsors etc, that’s how I will make money from my podcast. I think people think about this in the wrong way sometimes. You won’t necessarily make money because you have a certain amount of listeners and you can just take it to an advertiser, and get money from them – it’s pretty rare unless you are a pretty big fish. The way you make money is from the content you deliver in the podcast and the service you are providing that you can mention and spruke. You don’t sell them in every episode, it’s more about making connections through the episode and being a person they want to follow and love, that then they go to your services and buy from you that way. No one likes ads, it’s about providing quality content and having things on the backend in your website, courses etc, that once you’ve got them and providing a service they want to be involved with, that podcast makes you money because you are amazing and people listen to your podcast.

 

CLARE:

Yes, one of the learning through business I’ve had is, if you focus less on how to make money and more on how to provide value, then the money will come. When people can see you are supporting them, that’s when the money will start to come.

 

I wouldn’t start a podcast to make money. I would start it to support your community and provide value, and then that becomes an avenue when people may want to work with you in the future.

The first steps to making a podcast

 

 

BRIANNA:

I have a course that I have created, the Bamby Media Podcourse, www.bambymedia.podcast.com  that steps the DIYer from start to finish, from content idea to the editing and even logo design. On the other end of it, the course helps you grow your podcast, and gives you tactics to keep creating good content. That’s what I would say, because I felt like there was huge hole, too many people coming to me for help and I was pricey, I understand that. Not everyone has the budget to get a full on production company, but I feel anyone that has a message they want to share, needs to be able to do that in some way. I also like the idea of giving someone more skills, that they’ll feel good about.

 

CLARE:
