Feel like you are going to have a meltdown?

Being a business owner is one of the most stressful jobs in the world.  As a business coach, my clients often reach that ‘breaking point’, which I assure them is perfectly normal!

Here’s my top tips for when you feel like you can’t take it anymore:

  • Prioritise YOU. This might mean that for a day/ weekend/ week you simply take some time out for yourself.  Don’t think about work, just for a while, and focus on getting yourself back on track.  This might mean running yourself a bubble bath, booking yourself in for a massage, reading a book, going for a wine or coffee with a girlfriend.  If the challenge is bigger, seek to have some professional help from a counsellor or psychologist
  • Get it all out. Put down everything on a piece of paper that you have to do.  This could take you hours, and that’s ok. It’s well worth the investment of time and many of my coaching clients say this process in itself  is quite therapeutic!
  • Do, Delete, Delegate. Any quick wins (i.e. less than 5 mins) just knock them over straight away.  Then ruthlessly cull the list.  It helps to do this with someone else, like your coach/ mentor, your business partner or a friend.  Usually someone from the outside can see things more clearly and help get rid of non-essential items.  Lastly, is to delegate.  Even if you don’t have staff, this is still something you can do!  Ask your partner to help out with some tasks, use the services of a virtual assistant or hire specialists in different fields.  What is left, prioritise in terms of urgency and/ or importance
  • Make a plan. Set yourself a time plan where you map out your whole week in half hour increments (for a template, contact me).   Allocate your tasks into your weekly plan to ensure you knock them over.  And make sure that moving forward you allocate time  for looking after yourself, including exercise and down time to manage your stress levels on an ongoing basis.

When it’s all feeling like too much, take a deep breath and work through these steps. It will all be ok and this is just a normal part of the small business journey!
